The New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) participated in the 11th Annual Lower Hudson Valley Engineering EXPO at White Plains High School on March 30, 2014. NYSSPE Executive Director, Anthony Fasano, President of the NYSSPE Westchester/Putnam chapter, Vinny Cannizarro, and NYSSPE Westchester Putnam Chapter Director, Ryan Lucia were all in attendance and acted as the judges for the high school Rube Goldberg “Zip the Zipper” competition.
The Engineering EXPO is intended to be a fun, hands-on learning event with a goal of teaching students and adults how engineering impacts almost everything we do on a daily basis. This year the EXPO saw over 4000 attendees, more than any previous years.
This year’s EXPO featured a Rube Goldberg competition in which teams of students constructed a machine with the purpose of zipping a zipper. Each machine had to consist of at least 20 steps and could be no larger than 6 feet x 6 feet x 6 feet. The time limit for each machine was 2 minutes.
First place went to the Putnam/No. Westchester BOCES. The Ulster BOCES placed second, and Nyack High School finished in third place.
