Brief History – 1926 – 2026
April 27, 1926, was set as the date for a general organization meeting to which engineers who had expressed an interest in the formation of a professional society were to be invited. On May 11, 1926, the first general assembly, participated in by public invitation, took place at the Schnorer Club, 163rd Street and Eagle Avenue, Bronx. On this occasion an election was held, and headquarters were temporarily established at 470 East Tremont Avenue, Bronx. The New York State Society of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors was officially born!
Key Milestones:
• 1926: NYSSPE founded by 14 licensed engineers and surveyors in New York.
One of them: David B. Steinman a civil engineer. He was the designer of the Mackinac Bridge and many other notable bridges, and a published author.
He grew up in New York City’s lower Manhattan and lived with the ambition
of making his mark on the Brooklyn Bridge that he lived under.
• 1934: NYSSPE played a role in forming the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).
• Early Focus: Advocating for licensure laws, ethical practice, adequate compensation, and public recognition for engineers.
• Local Growth: Local chapters, like the Monroe Professional Engineers Society (MPES) in 1929, quickly followed.
• STEM Initiatives: Developed early STEM programs (originally “Learn Tech”) in the late 1980s, led by Beverly Schwartz.
