The Engineering Body of Knowledge, First Edition, 2013, is a publication which shall serve as the common intellectual ground for all Professional Engineers, regardless of employment or engineering discipline. It is officially defined as the depth and breadth of knowledge, skills, and attitudes appropriate to enter practice as a Professional Engineer, and it reminds us that as engineering professionals, the public health, safety, and welfare are our responsibilities.
The three fundamental “capabilities” of Professional Engineers that are necessary for entry into the practice of engineering as a P.E. include knowledge consisting of comprehension of theories, principles, and fundamentals, skills which allow tasks to be performed and knowledge to be applied, and attitudes which define the response one feels and experiences to a variety of situations.
The Engineering Body of Knowledge (BOK) was developed with the future in mind, hoping to guide the Professional Engineers who will protect and lead society of tomorrow.
Its contents include a description of the Body of Knowledge Concept, the vision, mission, and values of the National Society of Professional Engineers, detailed attributes of the Professional Engineer of the Future, and a descriptive overview of 30 capabilities which the Professional Engineer harnesses, some of which include Mathematics, Design, Risk Reliability and Uncertainty, Safety, Societal Impacts, Leadership, Lifelong Learning, Professional Attitudes, and Teamwork.
