John F. Barden, Jr.
November 2, 1925 – December 20, 2015
Poughkeepsie – John Freeman Barden, Jr., age 90, of Poughkeepsie, passed away on December 20, 2015. He was born in Poughkeepsie on November 2, 1925, the son of John Freeman Barden, Sr. and Gertrude Swasey Barden. He was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and received his engineering degree at Virginia Tech. John served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bennington. He was a retired Civil Engineer for the New York State Office of General Services.
John served as a Deacon, Elder, Member of the Session and Sunday School Superintendent for the First Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Valley, New York. He was a Pop Warner football coach and served as Pop Warner Commissioner. John was President of the Dutchess County Chapter of the NYS Society of Professional Engineers, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, and served on the Board of Directors of the District 8 NYS Association of Highway Engineers.
John was a wonderful and kind individual who made an impression on the young men he coached, as well as many of the children in the neighborhood who he would take to Brenner’s to get ice cream. He and his wife hosted neighborhood Easter egg hunts and football games in their front yard for the kids. John bowled with the NYS Transportation Engineers bowling league for over 50 years. He was a long time New York Mets fan. His blue eyes sparkled above his ever present smile every day of his life. His heart was wide open to everyone who came into his life.
On June 10, 1953, John married Jane Chambers in Radford, Virginia. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Jane Bain of Lansing, New York, son John Freeman Barden III (Wendy) of Poughkeepsie, son Tyler Barden and his partner Jessica Gunsch of Hyde Park, daughter Priscilla Sumislaski (John) of Ringwood, New Jersey, grandchildren Paul and Gary Bain, Kyle Barden and Danielle Sumislaski. He is also survived by his brother James Barden of Phoenicia, New York, his sister-in-law Peggy Miller (Roy) of Fairfax, Virginia, his sister-in-law Joan Hill of Alexandria, Virginia and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Victor, and his son-in-law Mark Bain.
