NYSSPE Attends the RPI Honor the Code Event

RPI – Honor the Code

During the week before classes start in every fall semester, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) welcomes an incoming group of bright and talented freshman to their campus for their convivial Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond (NRB) program. Throughout this weeklong event, staff, upperclassmen, and new students all partake in fun and challenging activities to socialize and become familiarized with the University’s campus and procedures. During the induction ceremony, a presentation involving the School of Engineering Code of Professional Integrity and Professional Ethics will be delivered to the entire incoming freshman class.

The New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) constantly strives to uphold its’ mission to be “an organization of engineering professionals from all disciplines and employment sectors that advocates licensure, promotes the ethical, competent and lawful practice of engineering, and enhances the image and interests of its members and the engineering profession.” In addition, the NYSSPE maintains many core values, including ethical conduct, professionalism, and protection of the public as well as preserving its’ number one goal: to “Promote the competent, ethical, and professional practice of engineering.”  By sponsoring and attending this presentation to the RPI freshman class of 2017, the NYSSPE hopes to assist in the instillment of these core values to the young minds of these bright and optimistic future engineers.

The presentation included some core principles that originate from the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). These fundamental canons include:

“Engineers, in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall:

1. 

   NYSSPE Executive Director with RPI Students

   Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.

2. Perform services only in areas of their competence.
3. Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
4. Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees.
5. Avoid deceptive acts.
6. Conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession. “

Through participating in this event, the NYSSPE hoped to extend its’ mission, core values, and goals to the young and aspiring engineers that will one day lead the next generation into world-changing advancements in science, technology and engineering.  The ultimate goal is to teach and remind the engineers of tomorrow to never forget the intrinsic values of always protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public and practicing engineering honorably, responsibly, lawfully, and ethically.
